What do you know about the humble worm?
Probably about the same as most people. They live in the garden!! But if you
take a bit of time to read this short narrative about them, you may learn a bit
more and find out why worms have been used for so long in angling and the worm
is just about the best all round fishing bait available.
Dendrobaena, also known as Dendros and the
European Nightcrawler, are rapidly becoming the most popular worm used, they
are tough, lively, wriggle and twist on the hook unlike any other bait.
They should not be confused with the Canadian Nightcrawler, which, speaking
from my own experience of those I have seen in the UK, usually look like they
have been through a washing machine on a very hot wash. Nor should they be
confused with the Alien Nightcrawlers that were in the film Men In Black 2!!!
Dendros are usually big, fat and juicy, but don't talk!
Not only can Dendrobaena be used in coarse
angling but in sea angling too. They will live in very cold water for a long
time. Ice fishing under 12 inches (300 mm) of ice these worms are still very
active, even after 30 minutes in freezing temperatures. They can live in normal
temperature water, fully immersed, for about 3 weeks. Obviously without
a hook through them!!!

In conventional angling the worms only
rival is the maggot. But the maggot is nowhere near as effective in attracting
fish, not only a wide range of different species, but specimen sizes as well.
As a live bait both are exceptional, if you don't get a nibble on a worm or
maggot the fish are simply not feeding. The difference between the worm and the
maggot is the size of fish anglers will catch. As you know in the fishing world
SIZE IS EVERYTHING!!
Anglers will tell you that nothing excites a swim into a frenzy better than a
hand full of chopped bait worms, don't just listen to me, ask them!

Type and
Size
Small Dendros are excellent for feeder fishing
because you can get them small enough to fit into the feeder without chopping.
Bream are particularly attracted into a swim by the placing of a large amount
of very small chopped worm segments which will not overfeed the fish but will
hold them in the swim. They are a good substitute if you prefer Redworms and
these are not available.
Medium sized Dendros are a good general sized bait for Carp, Bass, Bream,
Tench, Perch, Roach, Rudd, Crucians, Chub, Barbel, even Pike and Zander. They
can be used chopped or whole.
Use the Large Dendrobaena when specimen fishing and for Eels. These are a
favorite bait of the commercial Carp fishing people and also a firm favorite
for Salmon. Dendrobaena used as bait for Salmon produce remarkable results,
either chopped or whole, they are equally effective.
The really big dendros are an excellent replacement for Lob worms, which are
more expensive, hard to get in an active condition and difficult to keep fresh
and alive.
Dendro worms can be stored easily with a bit of care, providing they are in a
reasonable sized container with some (very small!) air holes and some moist
peat, out of direct sunlight and somewhere cool like a garage, they will live
quite happily for weeks, no need to keep them refrigerated. That will please
your partner!

These little worms are a very attractive
bait for quality fishing of all types. The Redworm, as its name suggests, is a
dark red colour. Do not confuse it with the brandling or Tiger worm, the red
worm does not have an acidic smell. They are excellent for Perch, big Roach,
Dace, Tench and especially for Bream, If you are after big fish, use a bunch of
reds on a large eyed hook. I've been told that 30 lb+ Carp, Barbel or large
Bream will be fatally attracted.
They are a popular choice with people who are fishing in Ireland.

Finally....
Millions of dollars have been spent over the
years to try to find a chemical or substance to add to fishing bait that will
make fish leap onto it with open mouth. And yet, despite their best efforts, it
is mostly in vain, because there is only one thing that out lasts and out
fishes them all, the humble worm.
